THE iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls Self-Introduction

I'm Totoki Airi, I'll be in your care. What kind of work do you do, Producer? Oh, so you produce idols! I see, who do you produce? Eh? Me? Ehhh?

Character Description

According to her first Starlight Stage Memorial commu, Airi first encounters the Producer at an idol audition. After introducing herself to the panel, she wants to ask something to them before they continue. Airi, confused, asks if she's in an audition. She also asks what this audition is for, thinking that it's for a part-time job. Producer tells her that she's in an idol audition, to his surprise. Airi tells him that she's heard of idols, but doesn't really know what they're all about. She confesses that her friend signed her up to this audition, asking if it's okay if she only came here for that reason alone. Getting Producer's approval, she continues to introduce herself. Her hobby is baking cakes, specifically shortcake and cheesecake. Airi then acts how she mixes the ingredients, the whipped cream like "guruguruguru~n" and the cheese like "gashigashigashi!" as she gets out of breath from her vigorous explaining. Doing her mixing impressions makes Airi feel hot, so she asks the panel if she can take her shirt off. Not even waiting for their response, she starts to take her shirt off, oblivious to the reactions to everyone else in the room. Panicked, Producer screams that she passes the audition right before she can finish removing it. Confused, Airi asks the Producer why she passed the audition even though she wasn't finished with her self-introduction. Producer replies, "any further and we could have gotten into deeper trouble." Not knowing what he meant by "trouble," Airi thinks nothing of it and is glad she's now becoming an idol. From then on, Producer accompanies Airi on her idol journey.

Airi originally didn't know she was auditioning to be an idol, and she states her friend applied for her. Nonetheless, she decided to become an idol anyway. A soft, airheaded girl, Airi is known for her ditzy and easy-going attitude. She gets confused easily and forgets things, often relying on others unintentionally to get through the day. During work or lessons, she often forgets what she's supposed to do or even where she is. When talking to others, she frequently nods off and others have to snap her back to reality. Other times, her responses to others are delayed or about something that they talked about ages ago. It's not that she isn't engaged in the conversation, but Airi spends a lot of time thinking about what she'll say next, often to the point where the appropriate time to respond has long past. Her ditzy attitude is also shown in her drama CD, where it takes her almost a full minute into her interview before she realizes that it's not the rehearsal; it's the real thing. Additionally, Airi often does the wrong thing without realizing too late, such as writing on an omelette with whipped cream instead of ketchup.

Many idols at her agency admire her "natural" aura and perceive her as someone who never puts up false pretenses or is calculating. She is generous, genuine, and gregarious to everyone she meets, always greeting friends as well as strangers. Additionally, she often brings some of her homemade baked goods to the office for the other idols and Producer to eat. Though many of her fellow idols find her as someone to dote on, they see how capable Airi is as an idol once she gets on the stage and never underestimates her ability to perform and connect with the audience.

A common gag that revolves around Airi is how easily she gets warm. Just slight movement or sitting in a room-temperature room can make her unbearably hot; her face turns red and she starts to sweat. When this happens, she often takes her outer-most layer off no matter if she is alone or surrounded by people. Most of the time, Airi does this subconsciously as if shedding her clothing is a force of habit. She doesn't notice she's doing it until someone points it out or after the action is done. In her moment of clarity, she gets really embarrassed and will apologize. Idols have noted that Airi takes off her clothes during costume changes very quickly, but puts them on at the same rate as the other girls. Airi also has a habit of unintentionally showing cleavage to the point where other idols and Producer have to intervene. For example, when Airi was at a summer festival with Ayuna, Ai, and Tsubaki, Airi would often loosen her kimono due to her being warm. Because the others are protective of her image, they stopped her from fussing with her kimono or leaning too far forward. Producer often gives his jacket to Airi in order to cover her up after she sheds layers, another common gag in the Theater 4-komas.

Though she has her carefree disposition, her number one worry is that she doesn't worry about anything. When she gets dragged down to reality or is unintentionally helped by Producer or other idols, Airi feels sad (and sometimes embarrassed) that she has to rely on others to take care of her and wants to be more independent and mature. This causes her to believe she won't be treated as an adult and she tries to take jobs as seriously as she can, even if she goes off track. Though not particularly wanting to be an idol at the beginning, Airi starts to enjoy her work as she does more lessons, jobs, and lives. She aims to become a top idol, so that Producer will become a "top producer." As an idol, she aims to become more independent and mature in order to take care of the people around her, especially the Producer. However, for the most part, her airheadedness seems to triumph over the person she dreams of becoming (for now).

Despite her airheaded attitude, Airi is a very talented baker and has a hobby of making desserts. Her specialties include shortcakes and cheesecakes. She has a huge sweet tooth and can be often seen eating different pastries in her free time. She often brings homemade or store-bought sweets to the office for other idols to enjoy. It's also mentioned that for her parents anniversaries she always bakes them a cake. Airi is also is a university student whilst being an idol. In her private life, she's known to have a lot of female friends and is always seen with one when on her college campus. Despite being very clumsy and airheaded, she's a member of her college's tennis club as well.

Because of her penchant for sweet things, she is close friends with Kanako Mimura. The two often make desserts and eat them together, along with Shiho Makihara and Satomi Sakakibara. Airi is also close to Aiko Takamori due to their easy-going and lax natures. They have a unit together called "Ai's."

  • Airi is voiced as of January 23rd, 2013 through THE IDOLM@STER CINDERELLA MASTER 013 Totoki Airi.
  • In Starlight Stage, her image stat specialty is either Visual or Vocal, depending on the card.
  • Airi is one of five Cinderella Girls to hail from Akita. The others are Hinako Kita, Saori Okuyama, Setsuna Imura and Yukino Aihara.
  • Rather than through the Cinderella Girl election or popularity poll, Airi got a voice through THE IDOLM@STER CINDERELLA MASTER 013 Totoki Airi. This makes her the only Cinderella Girl to neither have an election-based unit nor a song based on the unit. Though for the 10th anniversary of THE iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls she was included with all the winners of the 10 elections in a unit with the song Koko Kara Mirai e!.
  • Until December 1st, 2019, Airi was the initial voiced idol with the least number of Starlight Stage SR cards, with only 2 sets at the span of 3 years and almost 9 months.

Fan Culture

  • Airi's Valentine SR was so sought after during release, with a very limited number, that many fans competed viciously in the event to obtain it. The event is now called "Bloody Valentine's" by players.
  • Airi was voted the most popular Cinderella Girls character and given the Cinderella Girl title in the 1st Cinderella Girls Election. Being the first Cinderella Girl ever crowned, and due to election albums not existing until the year following, she was never featured on a corresponding album.
