THE iDOLM@STER POPLINKS Profile Quote
"I'm Daigo Kabuto, a 14-year-old former 6th generation chairman! Looks like somethin' interesting is about to happen. Course I'll help ya!"
Daigo is hardworking, friendly and thoughtful towards others. He always stays positive no matter what and is always available to give his unitmates reassurance whenever needed. Daigo is friendly towards everybody he meets, and will always give everyone the benefit of the doubt. He has a habit of always rushing to the aid of others in need, even if they're complete strangers: in his Halloween Live 2015 event magazine, he left his unitmates' sides to help out a woman who had lost her purse, and later in his White Day Live 2017 magazine, he immediately offered to check a lady's hand for injuries after she fell near him. Daigo will always offer a helping hand to those who need it, even if it may seem like a difficult task at hand.
His motto is "Smiles are number one", and his goal is to cheer people up with his performances. One of Daigo's catchphrases is "Gold-Star Smile" (はなまる笑顔, Hanamaru Egao), which he commonly uses to describe the smiles of his fans, and was even listed as one of his likes during a Twitter campaign. He wishes to make the world smile and says that the type of idol who can make the whole world smile is the definition of a top idol, so he aims to become one too.
Daigo is a hard worker and will go all out to achieve success. His committed attitude stems from both his Yakuza upbringing and the fact that he doesn't want to let the other members of F-LAGS down. Daigo often worries about his singing ability, and in-universe his singing has been described as "passable", which causes Daigo to worry about whether he can put on good live shows. However, what he lacks in his vocal abilities, he makes up for with his incredible dancing skills. Daigo also feels somewhat embarrassed whenever Ryo and Kazuki catch him practicing things such as poses or how to look cool, but will still ask them for advice when needed.
Despite being only 14-years-old, Daigo has many skills that one wouldn't expect, such as being a skilled Iaido (a form of martial arts involving quick drawing of a sword) practitioner and having very focused concentration as a result. He also knows how to properly put on a yukata in only a few seconds, which Ryo comments on as being impressive. A lot of Daigo's unexpected skills come from his upbringing as a Yakuza heir, however, the others at 315 Production are unaware of the Kabuto family being a Yakuza family, and as such are unaware of where these skills come from. When Ryo and Kazuki ask about Daigo's family in the Winter Snow Live 2018 event, Daigo simply just states that his parents operate a "family business" that he was initially chosen to take over as the lead heir. Daigo has to make excuses for where his knowledge of Yakuza terminology comes from, in the Barren Flower of Virtue event, he chalks up his knowledge of the positions in a Yakuza organization as being due to watching a lot of Yakuza movies with his grandfather, of whom he is very close to.
Daigo's family situation is complicated, however, he remains close with his grandfather who still lives back in Hiroshima, and the two exchange letters frequently. In the aforementioned Barren Flower of Virtue event, Daigo hopes that the Yakuza-idol film that he and the others are recording will put a smile on his grandfather's face, which it successfully does. Due to his current family situation, the topic of family, in general, is a somewhat awkward topic for Daigo. However, as time has progressed, he has begun to view F-LAGS as his family; when he was gifted a photo frame and advised to place a picture of his family in it, Daigo proceeded to ask the Producer to take a photo of him, Ryo and Kazuki together, complete with everyone at 315 Production in the background. Daigo greatly appreciates Ryo and Kazuki, the latter of whom he refers to as Sensei (先生).
Daigo is followed around by bodyguards due to his important family status. However, these bodyguards sometimes make things awkward, such as scaring the members of Mofumofuen whilst searching for them, or inspecting the chocolates gifted to Daigo by his fans during a fan event to ensure that they were safe to eat, whilst accidentally crumpling up the packaging in the process. However, Daigo holds no bitterness towards his guards and often encourages them to wear smiles so that they come across as less intimidating, and during Snow Live 2018, he worries over whether they'll be cold in the snowy venue whilst tailing him. Daigo's bodyguards refer to him as Sixth Chairman (六代目, Rokudaime, literal translation being "Sixth Generation"), reflecting his status as the Kabuto family's sixth generation heir.
Daigo, being a member of the Kabuto family, was raised in a Yakuza household. The youngest of 5 brothers, Daigo never expected to hold a majorly important role in the family. However, his grandfather decided to appoint him as the next head of the family, much to the shock of both Daigo and his brothers (traditionally, family businesses and similar organizations are usually handed down to the first son). Daigo's status as the youngest member of the family caused said decision to become a sour point among the Kabuto family, with Daigo's older brothers arguing with one another and the family dynamic devolving into chaos. Daigo noticed after a while that all of the smiles on his family's faces had disappeared, and he blamed himself for it.
Eventually, Daigo handed over the title to one of his older brothers in an effort to stop the arguing. However, still afraid of the turmoil starting up again, Daigo decided to move to Tokyo, and as a result of this, he fears that he cannot return to his hometown in Hiroshima just yet, as his presence could start the arguing all over again. As a result, Daigo hasn't seen any of his family face-to-face in a while, and the only relative he's still in contact with is his grandfather.
Daigo's backstory and his dynamic with his family are explored primarily in the Winter Snow Live 2018 and The Barren Flower of Virtue mobage events. In the former, Daigo explains the situation with his family to Ryo and Kazuki, whilst hiding the Yakuza elements of it. When a young boy believes that F-LAGS have stolen his sister from him, Daigo starts showing obvious signs that the young boy's words are affecting him, and eventually reveals that he hates the idea of being responsible for tearing a family apart. In the latter event, Daigo's grandfather sends him a letter asking to see him in person, but Daigo reveals to his unitmates that he cannot return to Hiroshima in case his family discovers that he's returned.
In his initial magazines, Daigo describes how he felt about his brothers arguing with one another, saying that it felt "hopeless" and that he couldn't do anything about it, and that part of his recent interest in idols is because Ryo showed him that idols are a form of strength.
One day whilst out and about, Daigo was unexpectedly bumped into by Ryo, who was still wearing a dress. Daigo tried to ask the boy if he was ok, however, his bodyguards quickly jumped in to ensure Daigo's safety. After Ryo apologized and ran off, Daigo couldn't help but wonder what was up with him. Sometime later, Daigo overheard his classmates talking about an idol who had made an important announcement lately, and then noticed that they were reading a magazine article about Ryo. Daigo immediately became interested in Ryo and gained the motivation to become an idol. Sometime later, Daigo joined 315 Production, where he was placed in a unit with the very idol who had inspired him. Daigo and Kazuki soon started spending time together outside of F-LAGS and started discussing their dreams together. As time went on, the three members of F-LAGS became incredibly close to one another, and Daigo began to consider them his family.
