THE iDOLM@STER 2 Introduction[2]

An energetic girl from Okinawa. She puts on a positive attitude brimming with self-confidence, but she may be overly dependent on the company of others for it.

I always act on any good idea the moment it hits me! What else... I'd say my body's in pretty good shape too! My hobbies are... Well, I like knitting, and table tennis I guess... Oh! I got all kinds of things I can cook really well too! You'd kill for my sunny side up or boiled eggs! There are still a lot of things that I have trouble with here on the mainland, but I don't really mind; I just gotta keep working at it! I do all my idol work full-throttle, so you better keep up with me! Think positive! Nankurunaisa!"

Personality

Hailing from Okinawa, Hibiki Ganaha is an energetic girl with a deep love for animals. Hibiki is incredibly confident and optimistic, going as far as to describe herself as being perfect in her iDOLM@STER 2 character intro. While she often takes rivalries with other idols seriously, she has a very friendly nature and will often unconsciously make friends with others as a result. Her high energy level makes her an exceptional athlete, formerly being the head of her table tennis club in Okinawa, although she prefers indoors sports as a result of being sensitive to the heat. In SP, she's been considered the "Dance Master" of 961 Production, which would continue into 765 Production, where she has the highest Dance stat of all playable idols in One For All.

Hibiki joined 765 Production following a fight with her brother, which caused her to cut herself off from her family until she could help finance them by becoming Top Idol. Her family consists of her mother and her brother, who is described as being incredibly similar to the Producer. Hibiki's family is incredibly important to her, which includes the wide variety of animals she raises all by herself (see below). Being away from her family can often make her homesick, which causes her to appreciate the connections she has with her pets, her fellow idols, and her Producer.

While often marketed as a cool, dancing prodigy, she's rather gullible, evidenced by her willingness to believe President Kuroi's numerous lies at face value of the course of SP. Additionally, she's easily teased as well, evidenced by her interactions with other idols, particularly often via skits in radio shows such as THE IDOLM@STER STATION!!! and THE IDOLM@STER MUSIC ON THE RADIO.

Her Okinawan heritage is extremely important to her and is often represented through her speech. Hibiki will often use words that confuse those unaware of the Okinawa dialect, such as greeting others with "Haisai" ("Hello!") and reassuring others with "Nankurunaisa!" ("Everything will work itself out!"). Hibiki has also been shown to be great at both housework and cooking meals, with Okinawan dishes such as chanpuru and somin-tashiya being among some of her specialities. Her hospitality has been expanded upon in the Puchimasu! manga series, where she'll occasionally don Kotori Otonashi's clothing and help around the agency.

Game Appearances

THE iDOLM@STER (Arcade) Prototype

In the prototype version of the arcade game, Hibiki was meant to be from Kansai, Nara. Hibiki was also 16 years old in the prototype, with the blood type B. However, she and Takane Shijou were ultimately cut from the official release.

THE iDOLM@STER SP

The release of the "Perfect Sun" game marked the first official in game appearance of Hibiki, revived from her original arcade design as a rival idol from 961 Production. Hibiki is very gullible in some sense, believing anything that President Kuroi says. She takes rivalry seriously and harshly trash talks at other idols, especially those from 765 Production. Despite this, she has a very friendly nature, and sometimes she unconsciously tries to make friends with the 765 Producer and his idols, though when remembering Kuroi's accusations, she snaps out of it and runs away. She is known as the 961 Production "Dance master". She is one of the members of Project Fairy and shares the image song "Overmaster" with her fellow members.

Hibiki's relations with certain idols are different than other games. For instance, Hibiki is very fond of Yayoi Takatsuki, who she thinks is very cute. Hibiki is always latching onto her, comparing her to a hamster and giving her Okinawan food. She always arrives at the scene when Yayoi is in trouble, even if it means to step inside 765 Production. Another example is Miki Hoshii, who she gets along with very well. The duo loves to play pranks on Takane Shijou.

THE iDOLM@STER Dearly Stars

In THE iDOLM@STER 2nd Vision games, Hibiki is an idol at 765 Production. She maintains her friendly, energetic personality, but now gets along well with the other idols.

In THE iDOLM@STER Dearly Stars, Hibiki was able to see through Ryo Akizuki's disguise as a female in a split second due to his makeup. She then called him pretty and promised to keep his secret.

THE iDOLM@STER 2

Her story focuses on her attempts to learn things she never had to put up with in Okinawa and her relationships with her family. Hibiki came to 765 Production after cutting herself off completely from Okinawa. She believes that she can't go back home until she becomes Top Idol, especially since she's been supporting her family financially. Her father died when she was young, and money has since been tight. It's up to the Producer to act as Hibiki's guardian while away from home. She gets homesick and lonely often (especially when reminded by objects she obtained in Okinawa, like "Sanpin Tea").[4]

In addition, Hibiki never got the chance to learn about basic Japanese protocol, so the Producer also helps her adjust to her surroundings. Several problems arise in the fact that her knowledge base is limited by many factors, like the fact that she had never read a magazine before she came to work as an idol due to the fact that there weren't magazines where she lived or that she believed that salad oil was made by squeezing salad. Her living conditions proved to be a problem as well, as Hibiki gets lost on trains, simply because she hadn't ridden one before her idol debut.[5]

Despite her limitations, Hibiki is eager to learn all she can and become a Top Idol for her family. In fact, her eagerness to help out culminated in her teaching and quizzing the Producer on Okinawan phrases so that they could learn more about each other.[6]

THE iDOLM@STER Gravure For You!

Volume 7 of the Gravure series focuses on Hibiki with a "Meet Your Idol" sequence that contains a small dialogue between her and the producer about her study habits.[7]
This volume also contains the HIBIKI TurquoiseBlueMIX; a mix of songs with Hibiki's vocals that can be played in the background while taking photos of the idols.

THE IDOLM@STER Break!

Puchimasu!

In Puchimasu!, as the other idols start finding puchidols that they take care of, Hibiki starts to feel somewhat jealous and wants one of her own. Takane hears her request and quickly summons Koami and Komami and tells them to fetch something. The two puchidols come back with a sack containing a new puchi that looks just like a small version of Hibiki, but Hibiki thinks they have overdone it by getting the little one there against her will and now wants to take her back to where she came from. With some help from Miurasan's teleportation powers, they arrive in a Brazil-like place which according to Takane is the puchidols home, but the puchidol denies the statement and explains that she's actually from Okinawa. Hibiki now realizes that Takane lied to her, but as soon as she confronts her, Takane teleports away with Miurasan.

After some wandering around, Hibiki stumbles onto Iori who's in the foreign land for a shoot, and they agree to all go home together as soon as she is finished. While she and the puchidol are waiting for Iori's shoot to finish, the puchi tells her that she would like to live with her in Japan. Hibiki happily accepts and names the puchidol "Chibiki" in the process.

THE iDOLM@STER 2 The world is all one!!

In THE iDOLM@STER 2 The world is all one!!, Hibiki is part of the unit SprouT together with Haruka Amami and Yukiho Hagiwara. She's the unit's best dancer, thus she helps the other girls get their moves straight. She and Haruka sometimes argue, but Yukiho usually helps them make up.

THE iDOLM@STER 2 Colorful Days

THE iDOLM@STER 2 Nemurihime

THE iDOLM@STER (anime)

Because of her natural athleticism, she often competes with Makoto Kikuchi and shows a rival-like aspect. In addition, she also gives advice to Takane Shijou.

She clearly converses with her pet Hamuzo, and there are scenes where she interprets Hamuzo's intentions to other idols (it was later revealed in ONE FOR ALL that she can understand what the animals are saying).

Her appearances on TV programs are mainly variety shows that require physical strength, such as "Nammasuka!? Sunday", where she appears in a part called "Hibiki Challenge", in which she challenged herself to run a grueling marathon from the mountains of Yamanaka to the studio. Due to the story she is in charge of and the person in it, she is sometimes said to be unsympathetic, but in reality, she is treated rather well by the media.

Trivia and Fan Culture

Trivia

  • In THE iDOLM@STER SP, Hibiki has a habit of singing with her eyes closed during live performances. However, this quirk has not since been brought into later games.
  • Hibiki dislikes wearing Cute and Girly outfits, which ironically, her attribute in Cinderella Girls is Cute.
  • Between THE iDOLM@STER SP and THE iDOLM@STER 2, Hibiki's three sizes shrank. Since this only happened to her, some fans theorize that Kuroi was lying about her three sizes.
  • Hibiki loses her pets almost all the time, thus asking for help from Takane Shijou and Miki Hoshii to look for them. Other idols help her as well in the anime.
  • In THE iDOLM@STER SHINY FESTA: Funky Note, it is revealed that she is actually pretty smart (to Producer's surprise) when she helps the Futami Twins with their homework.
  • Hibiki is a crybaby, usually being the only or one of the first to cry in dramatic and even comedic scenes such as in the movie, or when she loses her pets in the anime and dramas.
  • In very early screenshots of THE iDOLM@STER SP, Hibiki had thick eyebrows.
  • Hibiki often uses the Okinawan greeting "Haisai" (which is generally used by males), rather than "Haitai".[8]
  • She shares the same birthday with Noriko Shiina.
  • The character Isma from the manga series Berserk is said to be inspired by Hibiki, as stated by its late author Kentaro Miura himself during an episode of NHK’s MAGNet TV show. [9]
