THE iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls Self-Introduction

"Haa, I'm so sick! On the outside, I might look stupid healthy, but the truth is I'm a late teenager with a heart of glass! Filled with the desire to give up on school! That's me, Riamu-chan!! If I become an idol, it'd be my one chance to do just that, right!? Right!?"

Character Description

According to her first Starlight Stage Memorial commu, Producer meets Riamu at an underground idol venue. At a show for an indie idol named A-chan, Riamu overhears some fans talking about how they think A-chan is super boring. Angry at their comments, Riamu immediately writes a review of the concert on her phone that praises A-chan and says that she'll support her forever. Fans reading Riamu's review disagree, say they would never support A-chan and that Riamu doesn't know what she's talking about. Enraged, she decides to leave the venue early to get gyoza to eat at home instead. On another night, Producer sees Riamu in the audience of a show for an indie idol named Mii-chan. Though the audience is enamored with Mii-chan, Riamu doesn't understand what all the hype is about. Going on her phone, she immediately writes another review that calls Mii-chan "shallow as hell." Deploring Riamu's review, fans reading it say that her opinions are "straight up garbage" and that she's just "trolling" her actual fans. As Riamu gets even more furious, Producer calls out to her and asks her why she likes A-chan. Riamu shies away at first, asking who he is. She says she's not good at conversations "offline," but she answers his question anyway. Riamu likes A-chan because she works hard and is "too precious for this world." When asked why she doesn't like Mii-chan, Riamu says that she cares more about selling her merchandise than with connecting with the audience on stage. She also touts that Mii-chan isn't even that pretty, saying that she's 100 times cuter than her (quickly retracted by her due to over-exaggeration).

Producer continues to question Riamu, asking if she likes idols. Finding that question preposterous, she tells Producer that she can't live without idols. Riamu needs them in order to trudge through her "messed up" daily life. When asked if idols didn't exist, Riamu says that she would be "so sick." After Producer presents his business card, Riamu guesses that he is A-chan or Mii-chan's producer. Looking a bit shifty, Riamu says that she's in a tight spot if that's actually the truth. Producer reveals that isn't the case and extends a invitation to Riamu, saying that he will be the Producer that makes her an idol. Riamu, in disbelief, calls him an idiot over and over again thinking that he's making fun of her. When he asks her what her charm points are, she replies with, "Hello, I'm trash!!" She continues, saying that she doesn't have any appeal and she would be cruising through life if she did. After a bit of coaxing, Riamu tells Producer that she wants to stand out but is afraid of being criticized. According to Riamu, she's a bit cuter than average but other than that she's just "a mentally ill blob with big boobs." She denies the offer, saying that there's no point that "trash like her" should be an idol as she'll being a lot of controversy. Riamu sighs and says that she blew her one big chance to become an idol. However, Producer tells her that she can be the star of controversy. Excited, Riamu says that he doesn't know what he's getting himself into. She asks him if she can call him "P-sama" as a result of him giving her this one chance at being an idol and potentially changing the direction of her life. After this meeting, Riamu's controversial and fiery idol journey finally begins.

Neurotic and contradictory, Riamu often is associated with the menhera subculture, though she herself does not identify as being part of that community or state of mind. Instead, she often refers to herself as a "Yutori-educated, SNS-raised female idol-loving otaku" with a "small fry mentality." Riamu is known for having frequent negative thoughts about herself and others, intense emotional ups-and-downs, no self-confidence, and cares about other people's opinions to an unhealthy degree. Riamu makes the decision to become an idol due to her desire to quit vocational school and as an attempt to turn her "dead-end" life around. Riamu uses the catchphrase yamu ("I'm so sick"), and frequently makes references to the fact that she is pessimistic, lonely, and depressed, but at the same time desperate for any kind of attention. Riamu has a strong desire to be depended on by others, but also is aware that she has no apparent strengths or special abilities. In her words, her only strengths that she sees in herself is her being "cuter-than-average" as well as having big breasts, but "they've never made her happy." Riamu is also known for having a very fragile mentality. She is known to switch between short but impactful manic and depressive episodes and her mood changes very frequently, going from joyful and energetic to sullen and lethargic in a split-second. Riamu has a habit of crying, often over trivial events. She has also been documented to see hallucinations and age regress to her 2-year old and 6-year old selves during traumatic events. However though Riamu is mentally weak, Riamu is seen to be somewhat mentally resilient. Though she always complains and is scathed by her trainers during idol lessons, she is headstrong, never gives up or skips lessons, and is quick to recover from bad experiences or days. Many fans have compared her work ethic to a "shape-memory alloy mentality" or a "paper defense-type but with a lot of HP and regenerative power." Many people believe that her perseverance through the toughest parts of being an idol is due to her love for idols, especially those who are hardworking. Though she doesn't want to work hard, she believes that she has to in order to be a true idol. Idols are sacred to Riamu, so to hold the title of being one when she doesn't give her all would be sacrilege.

Her low self-esteem and mental fragility can be traced back to her family's dynamic with her. Although her relationship with her parents and her sister are good, she sees them as accomplished individuals who are successful working abroad. Riamu often compares herself to her older sister, who is a painter working in America. Compared to them, Riamu is afraid of aging out of her teenage years and becoming part of the workforce. This is seen in Riamu's discouragement to finish her vocational school's program and does not attend class anymore even though she still is enrolled there. Unlike them, she is scared of growing up and just wants to attend idol shows and eat gyoza for the rest of her life. Riamu has told the Producer that her personality developed due to not being able to "surpass" her other family members. Her living situation augments the pressure she feels from her family's success, as she lives alone in an apartment paid for by her parents (as they think she's still in vocational school). Due to her default stage costume emulating a nurse outfit and saying she got the chance to finally wear a lab coat as a costume, it's heavily inferred that she attended nursing school.

Despite her low self-esteem, she is obnoxiously opinionated when talking about things she is interested in, especially idols. A passionate idol otaku, she has a habit of judging others based on which idols they like, dislike, and how often they change the idols they support. She is known by others to be unrelenting and annoyingly passionate about her own opinions, and she always believes her judgement to be correct. Riamu prefers idols that work hard and are genuine in their efforts to connect with fans and despises idols who are superficial and spend more effort selling their goods than on the stage. According to her, idols are indispensable and are an instant cure for a damaged mental state. Riamu seems distrustful and critical of idol otaku, despite being one herself, only having faith in otaku who attend events and concerts in person. She seems suspicious of idol otaku who claim to support every idol in a group (known as daredemo daisuki or DD) or fans that change who shift their loyalty to a different member in an idol group (known as oshihen), because she does not believe they will actually be loyal to Riamu as an idol. It can be inferred that these attitudes likely stem from Riamu's low self-esteem and her desire for her fans' undivided attention and support. Even after becoming an idol, she still attends her oshis' lives, fan-meetings, and events and supports them just the same even before her fame. Riamu also makes her own idol-related objects that she brings to her oshi's activities like homemade uchiwa fans or penlights. In her SR card "Feeling Hella Hyped," she is seen heavily sobbing after leaving her oshi's graduation live in full wota garb including penlights, hachimaki, towel, and happi coat. She pleads Producer for a day off to attend her favorite idol's last performance, saying she would attend even if she had to crawl all the way there. In the awakened version of the card, she is performing wotagei on stage with her fans. Her wota origins can be seen clearly in her image song OTAHEN Anthem; the fancalls are integrated into the actual song as well as having the audience sing the last chorus to Riamu as she does the fancall/wotagei herself.

Riamu is known for using various SNS platforms to talk to fans and speak on her opinions about idols. Additionally, she uses a lot of current otaku internet slang in her speech in real life, primarily originating from Twitter. Though she boasts that she has become a master of SNS, she is always seen getting flamed by people because of her fiery comments and poor word choice (whether this is purposeful remains to be known). Riamu is known to be flamed for both controversial and safe topics alike. This phenomenon is referred to in-game as the Riamu-style Ignition Process. She often does controversial actions outside of SNS as well, such as throwing up her middle finger in her SSR card "No One Beats Riamu Yumemi." Riamu is terrified of being hated and begs her fans to be nothing but kind to her, but at the same time states that she doesn't care if she causes controversy as long as she stands out, a trait of her unstable nature. Riamu's Valentine's Day 2019 lines imply that she thinks people coming to hate her is something inevitable, so she wants to receive as much love and attention as she can from them before it happens. She calls her fans "Yami-kun" and "Yami-chan" after her catchphrase yamu.

Because Riamu entered the production later than most of the other idols, she sees all the idols at the production as her higher-ups and mentors, no matter how young. Due to being an idol wota before becoming an idol herself, she has a tendency to act more like a fan and spams them with compliments and well-wishes. When an idol unexpectedly talks to Riamu, she can only respond using one-word phrases like "Yes" and "Okay." In terms of worth, Riamu always puts herself beneath other idols as they are pure and of "light itself" while she is dirtied and "like trash" because of her NEET-like otaku lifestyle. An example would be how she refuses getting a piggy-back from Mio Honda (and later Yukimi Sajo and Kozue Yusa) as she claims her the darkness she carries inside makes her super heavy and that their backs are too "high-level" for her body. Riamu often has a mental breakdown when idols interact with her for work, whether it's linking arms during a photoshoot, playing with them at the beach, or performing side-by-side with them on stage. She always thanks the higher powers for letting her live this ideal paradise, as she feels like she isn't worthy for interacting with such "angels." This also happens during her private life. In her SSR card "Riamu Yumemi's Party Night" she unexpectedly bumps into Yui Ohtsuki, Mika Jougasaki, and Rina Fujimoto while shopping alone. As they talk to her, grab onto her, laugh at her jokes, and feed her sweets, Riamu is in a daze being a lowly wota surrounded by "such gorgeous beauties." Riamu calls other idols that pamper her "Mama", having mentioned Karen Hojo, Mayu Sakuma, and Shin Sato with the title. However, the Go Just Go! event commu reveals that she is also rather picky regarding the usage of the pronoun, as she refuses to call Kyoko Igarashi. This is because she believes someone like Kyoko would "normally accept" the title and that the idols she usually calls "Mama" often "scold" or reprimand her. Additionally, during the sales commu featuring Riamu and Momoka Sakurai, Riamu refers to Momoka as “Mama” and says that she’s much more like a mama than her real mama.

Riamu's closest friends are Akari Tsujino and Akira Sunazuka as they all debuted at the same time as solo idols, later forming a unit called #UNICUS. Though they have little in common, they've spent most of their time together trying to navigate through the idol world and often depend on each other in times of trouble as a support system. In their free time, they often go shopping in Harajuku together, have sleepovers at Riamu's apartment, and play video games that Akira recommends. Riamu really values her friendship with Akari and Akira as she feels like they're the only two people along with Producer that love Riamu for who she really is. In a 4-koma when Riamu has a nightmare where she has to choose to spend time with either Akari & Akira or Producer, her mind breaks unable to choose between them. Riamu also skips lessons with Anzu Futaba, with Kirari Moroboshi often having to drag them back to the practice room.

Trivia and Fan Culture

Trivia

  • Riamu is voiced as of July 31st, 2019 through [Swimsuit Commerce] SR card in the original Mobage game, as a result of placing third overall in the 8th Cinderella Girl General Election.
  • Riamu uses the first person pronoun boku. She is the third Cinderella Girls idol to use the pronoun after Sachiko Koshimizu and Asuka Ninomiya.
    • She also refers to herself in third person sometimes, using "Riamu-chan" and "Yamu-chan."
  • Riamu describes her fashion style as "Yumekawaii-kei" and cares a lot about fashion, liking to shop in Harajuku or buy clothes online.
  • Riamu's favorite food is gyoza, mentioning that she is going to have one-person gyoza party at her house in a LIVE battle line and also giving homemade gyoza as one of her Valentine's 2019 gifts.
    • Riamu has no interest in cooking other than making gyoza, often getting meals at chain restaurants and convenience stores.
  • Riamu's hometown being "A kind world" is a reference to the phrase, "Together, let's make a kind world", frequently said by Japanese SNS users who simply avoid topics they dislike and do not want to get into online arguments or drama, and encourage others to do the same.
  • In a card line, Riamu says that she wants people to only use sweet words as if they are throwing marshmallows, which is a reference to the Japanese Twitter app Marshmallow that allows users to send anonymous messages, but filters out those that are rude or insulting.
  • In her Normal special training episode in Starlight Stage, it's revealed that her parents both gave her and her older sister Kirakira Names and Riamu isn't a fan of it.
  • In her 3rd SSR, it is implied that her natural hair color was black as a child.
  • It's rumored that when Riamu's phone screen is broken, her heart is also broken.
  • Though her official profile says that her bust size is "huge," she claims that it's around 95 centimeters in a card line.
  • Riamu gets hay fever.
  • Riamu's SR card [Declaration of Unconditional Feelings] is a reference to the closing of the Cinderella Girls mobile game, as it features Riamu looking at a screen with an announcement of her favorite mobage's termination. Her awakened features a phone with said termination notice displayed.
    • This Riamu card was also the last ranking card of the "Idol Live Royale" event series.
  • Due to advertisements and banners refusing to show her second SSR (her most recent card at the time) due to her sticking up the middle finger, her third SSR was released in very close proximity to her second one for use on promotional material.
  • She shares the same birthday with Cosmo Kamizuru.

Fan Culture

  • Riamu placed 3rd in the 8th Cinderella Girl General Election as well as 2nd out of all the Passion-attribute idols. This was an unexpected and surprising development, as she had been active for less than a year and only had her default card released but still outranked popular idols that were highly-predicted Cinderella Girl candidates.
    • Concerning the comment she made after placing, Riamu was frustrated that she placed so much higher than her seniors that have worked hard for a long time while she just debuted and hasn't put out any effort yet. Fans have described this as the simultaneous best and worst prologue for Riamu.
  • As they are both Passion idols with a cute aesthetic and a sometimes grim outlook on life, Riamu has been heavily associated with Shin Sato in fanart, with works often portraying Shin taking a mentor role and giving Riamu encouragement.
  • Riamu is usually depicted alongside Akari Tsujino and Akira Sunazuka by fans, fellow Cinderella Girls idols announced following the series' 7th anniversary. Their in-game unit was previously called #LookingForAUnitName (#ユニット名募集中 Yunitto-mei Boshuu-chuu), until they finally had their true unit name revealed to be #UNICUS during the UNIQU3 VOICES!!! event.
  • Fanart on Twitter and Pixiv often display Riamu doing activities that are misfortunate and show off her apparent bad luck, such as forgetting her wallet after eating an entire meal at a gyoza restaurant, dropping her phone in gyoza dipping sauce, or travelling a long distance to a concert venue on the wrong performance day.
    • This is mirrored after real-life unfortunate events regarding Riamu, such as the trending tag for Riamu's Blanc Fes SSR (#フェス限りあむ/#FesLimitedRiamu) being cut off at a weird place, turning it into (#フェス限り/#FesEnd).
  • Riamu placed 15th in the 2019 "NicoNicoPedia Net Buzzword 100 List". The trophy was given to her voice actress, Seena Hoshiki.
