Self-Introduction
"Ni... Ni-nice... Nice to meet you...! I am... I am Saori Okuyama, 19 years old. I... I think that I might make a fool of myself and mess up or something... But, I'll work hard so produce me!!!"
THE iDOLM@STER POPLINKS Profile Quote
I-I'm Saori Okuyama! I can't believe a countryside person like me gets to be part of a project like this...!
Character Description
Saori is a girl from Akita who becomes an idol looking to change her geeky image. She introduces herself to the Producer by saying she'll probably screw up and cause trouble for him. She also has a unique Touhoku dialect, most notably using "wadasu" (わだす), which basically means "I", to refer to herself. In her First Commu, it was shown that Saori's dialect completely comes out if she's feeling nervous.
Initially sporting a braid, huge light brown glasses, unkempt eyebrows, and a freckled face, she was also the first girl in the Cute category to wear glasses. However, once she trains as an idol, she sports a huge change. Saori has her eyebrows refined and her hair taken down. She also removes her glasses, making her almost entirely a different person than before. Her glasses in her idol form are used as a necklace accessory, as can be seen in some of her awakened cards. She also normally wears a pink bear hairclip, which can also change expressions according to her moods.
In the tie-in Cinderella Girls Theater skits, Saori has a reserved manner but is trying to be a more outgoing idol. Well-known for her acting skills, she seems to have gained much of her experience from performing in her hometown. She is good friends with Fuka Asano, as both find it difficult to gain courage from new hairstyles or outfits and therefore understand and relate to each other perfectly. As a unit, they are known as Purely Twin. When she returns to visit her hometown from work, she is astounded to find that the entire community supports her as an idol and that her face is plastered all over town as a local celebrity, despite admitting she used to be mocked by the people from her hometown because of her dream of becoming an idol. Saori is thoroughly embarrassed when Ayuna Hamakawa makes very physical advances to the Producer, although she didn’t know Ayuna was practicing for an upcoming role. Her imitation of an angry grandpa when she was a kid helped her land a role in a horror movie called The Wonders of St. Kutsu Academy starring Koume Shirasaka, where Saori played the role of a zombie girl (along with Makino Yagami, whom she has to teach on how to put on a convincing zombie performance), which Mary Cochran and Kyoko Igarashi praised her for her convincing performance. Saori, along with Ayuna, Hasumi Nagatomi, and Shiori Sena, was impressed by Kurumi Ohnuma’s "ability" to accidentally get wrapped by a jump rope.

Trivia and Fan Culture
Trivia
- Saori is rather choosy when it comes to rice, since she comes from an agricultural area.
- Saori is one of the five Cinderella Girls idols from Akita. The other four are Airi Totoki, Yukino Aihara, Setsuna Imura, and Hinako Kita.
- She has been collecting bear goods since childhood, and she says her collection has grown rapidly since she came to the city, according to one of her puchi TOP Lv21~30 quotes.
- Kanade's voice actress is a producer of Saori.
- Coincidentally, both Saori and Kanade have played the role of the Dormouse from Alice in Wonderland, with the former appearing in an event starring Frederica Miyamoto as Alice and the latter in Starlight Stage's 2019 April's Fools event starring Nono Morikubo.
- Airi calls her Saori-chan in a Cinderella Girls Theater strip, despite being a year younger than Saori, suggesting a close relationship between both.
- The Wonders of St. Kutsu Academy event reveals that Saori was traumatized by namahage (demonlike beings in local Akita folklore who are said to hunt bad-behaving children) during childhood. The Tourism Ambassador illustration, revealed on May 8, 2022, depicts her getting startled over Setsuna and Hinako carrying the blue and red oni masks worn by people depicting namahage.
- Saori was the second-to-last Cute unvoiced idol to receive an SS Rare card set. She was also the last idol initially implemented in Starlight Stage to receive her first SS Rare card set.
- She shares the same birthday with Konomi Baba.
Fan Culture
- Some of her fanart depicts in her initial appearance (with thick eyebrows), as some fans consider that a notable charm other than her eyeglass and bear accesories.
- Saori is often nicknamed "Oguyama-san" or "Ogu" by fans alike, due to her accent. Fans have also come up with other puns involving her full name.
- Because of her rural background, fans also group Saori with Shinobu Kudo and Akari Tsujino.
- Saori does share an official unit with Shinobu, also featuring Frederica Miyamoto and Tsubaki Egami, this unit is named Gorgeous☆New Year's Quartet (絢爛☆新春カルテット or Kenran☆Shinshun Karutetto).
- She is also compared to many other characters from outside of the series with similar designs, including but not limited to;
- Yu Miaoyi/Gubijin from Fate/Grand Order,
- Mikoto Sakaide from McDonald's Japan's 2019 Gratin Croquette Hamburger ad (who, coincidentally, is voiced by Aimi Terakawa, the seiyuu of Julia from Million Live), and still many others.
- On Twitter, her appreciation day is celebrated every 9th day of each month. This is a pun on her Ogu nickname ("o" representing 0 and "ku"/"gu" representing 9).
- This is spun off into another celebration day on November 9th, dubbed Good Ogu Day or Ii Ogu no Hi (Japanese: #いいおぐの日 ), itself also a pun of the month (with each "i" representing 1 and November being the 11th month, hence "ii").
